Cow Protection-Go-Raksha-and-Urbanization

One should follow the cows, feed them sufficiently, and circumambulate them. If the cows are happy then Lord Gopala is understood to be satisfied.” The real purpose of cow protection is to please the Supreme Lord Krsna. Milk, dung, urine, ghee, yoghurt and draught are the natural by-products and are considered most essential for religious rituals and producing the necessities for a wholesome life. In the Vedic agrarian model milk is not considered the goal of cow protection and a bull calf is celebrated more than a female calf as once trained, he is productive for more years than the dairy cows. “Excess males and unproductive females” are terms used by commercial dairy farmers that have nothing to do with cow protection but everything to do with cow exploitation. Urbanization and mechanization have rendered bulls unemployed whereas in the Vedic model the bull calves are valued more than the females […]

krishnas message for cow protection

namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca jagad-dhitaya krsnaya govindaya namo namah “My Lord, You are the well-wisher of the cows and the brahmanas, and You are the well-wisher of the entire human society and world.” (Vishnu Purana 1.19.65) In this prayer special mention is made of teh protection of the cows and Brahmanas. Brahmanas are the symbol of spiritual education, and cows are the symbol of the most valuable food. These two living creatures, the brahmanas and the cows, must be given all protection – that is real advancement of civilisation. The Vedic literature tells how Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, takes the role of a cowherd boy for His past-times. In fact, one of Krishna’s names is Govinda, meaning “one who gives pleasure to the cows”. ”. Five thousand years ago, Krishna appeared as the son of the leader of a cowherd community. At that time a man was wealthy […]

Krishna and Cows

namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca jagad-dhitaya krsnaya govindaya namo namah “I offer repeated obeisance’s unto Lord Krishna, who is the protector and well-wisher of the cows and the Brahmans. He is also the protector of the entire society. Unto that Lord, who is always satisfying the senses of the cows, I offer my obeisance’s again and again.” [Vishnu Purana 1.19.65] The words go-brahmana-hitaya indicate that the Supreme Lord is especially concerned with the welfare of the cows and considers them before even the Brahmans (spiritual teachers). The Brahmans (spiritual teachers) are dear to the Lord because they worship him, as indicated by the words brahmanya-devaya (the Lord of the brahmanas). cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpavriksha- lakshavrteshu surabhir abhipaalayantam lakshmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam govindam aadi-purusham tam aham bhajami “Lord Krishna is situated in a spiritual abode made of transcendental gems. In that abode he is surrounded by millions of desire fulfilling trees (kalpa-vriksha), and he takes pleasure in […]

Be Very Interested in Cows…

“Persons who are advancing in Krishna Consciousness should therefore take instruction from this pastime and also be very interested in cows and the holy name of Visnu” –Srila Prabhupada (in ‘Krsna – The Supreme Personality of Godhead’, Chap 6, Putana Killed, Pg-60) The Sankirtana movement Srila Prabhupada implanted all over the world is creating a revolution by making more and more receive sublime way of living in Krishna Consciousness. The central to the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness is however, “Simple Living – High Thinking”. And central to “Simple Living – High Thinking” is Cow. In other words, when there is no “Simple Living – High Thinking”, then there will be no Cow protection. Similarly, when there is no Cow protection there will be no “Simple Living […]

Saga of Foolishness!

“Bharat Varsha”, also known as “Arya Vart” and now constitutionally named as “India” is pre-dominantly a country of villages. The economy of this country is mainly based on Agriculture. Agriculture and no other culture is the culture of India. The king-pin of agriculture in the country is the Cow, other-wise known as “Kamdhenu”. Perhaps no country on Earth has the special relationship with cows that India does, a relationship that is often misinterpreted in the West as Cow-worship. The Cow in Indian Culture is considered as a mother figure nurturing life. It may be hard to believe, but “Independent India” now kills more cows than ever before! Even more than enslaved India under Christian British rule, or even the ruthless Moslem emperors! It is usually said today that you cannot really be sure if there is not a tiny little bit of some cow part in the pills or medicine […]

Vegetarianism – reasons of benifits

Reasons to why void non veg and adopt Vegetarianism Vegetarianism A lot of people think it’s a hassle. Truth is, meat-eating is the real hassle, the real self-sacrifice. I’ll explain: Economically Meat-eating is just about the most expensive legal habit you can have. It’s just way too much of a bummer for me to drive down to the store and shell out all that cash for a little slab of flesh. My approach is so much simpler – last night, for example, I tossed in three bucks grand total and made a big, tasty, filling dinner. It blows me away how expensive meat-eating is. Smart shopper, you don’t need me to tell you more – just truck on down to the supermarket and scope out the facts. Health With all the stress on cholesterol and that stuff, it’s no secret that meat is a time bomb. I can’t figure out […]

Cows in Vedic Tradition – Reasons to Worship Mother Cow

According to my understanding Hindus worship cows because they were our livelihood. If this were the case, then we would have other’s worshiping the horse, others worshiping the goat, others worshiping their jewellery, etc., according to their livelihood. The worship of the cow goes much deeper than the economic development we receive from her. Do the scriptures tell us to worship our mother, father and guru simply because they feed us? Or is there a higher purpose behind it? Within the body of the cow reside all 33 crore devatas. Respect to the cow is respect to God, for where ever there is the cow, Lord Vishnu also resides. This is the scriptural statement. We should not lower our motives to the respect for money or livelihood. The Gita (8.6) tells us that the realized soul sees gold and stones equally, having no attachment for either: jnana-vijnana-triptatma kuta-stho vijitendriyah yukta […]

Your Lipstick: Made With Cow Brains

Here’s the bad news: Cow brains may be an ingredient in your lipstick. The good news? The FDA is banning it. The Food and Drug Administration has told cosmetics makers they can no longer use brain and spinal cord tissue from older cattle in lipstick, hair sprays, and other products, reports The Associated Press. The fact that they were used at all will likely surprise millions of women who use these products daily. And that’s not the only surprise: The new FDA regulations still allow use of these animal tissues in cosmetics as long as they come from younger cattle. The ban on cow brains and spinal cord tissue from cosmetics is aimed at preventing a fatal human variant of mad cow disease, called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, from reaching people. Also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, mad cow disease causes the brains of infected animals to waste away. There is no […]
