Dabur A2 Cow Ghee vs Bilona A2 Gir Cow Ghee — How to Compare Any A2 Ghee

Quick Answer

If you are comparing a big-brand A2 cow ghee, such as the ones sold by Dabur and other national brands, with small-batch bilona A2 Gir cow ghee, focus on four things: which breed the milk comes from, whether the ghee is made from curd by the bilona method or from cream, whether the source farm is named, and the price per kilogram. These tell you more than any label claim.

Why this comparison comes up

As A2 ghee has become popular, large FMCG brands have started selling A2 cow ghee alongside their regular ghee, and people naturally compare them with farm brands that make bilona ghee from indigenous cows. Both can be genuine products. They are simply made at very different scales, often in different ways, and at different prices.

We are a small farm brand, so we will not make claims about another company’s process. Instead, here is how to compare any A2 ghee fairly, using information each brand should give you.

Question 1: Which breed?

A2 refers to the type of beta-casein protein in milk. Indigenous Indian breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, and Red Sindhi naturally produce A2 milk. Some exotic-breed herds are also tested and selected for A2. Check whether the brand names the breed. A label that just says ‘A2’ without explaining the source tells you less than one that says ‘Gir cow’.

Question 2: Bilona or cream method?

Most commercial ghee, A2 or not, is made by separating cream from milk and heating it. Traditional bilona ghee is made by setting whole milk into curd, hand-churning the curd to get butter (makkhan), and then slowly heating that butter. Bilona uses far more milk per kilogram of ghee and takes much longer, but many people prefer its aroma, grainy texture, and the traditional process.

If a pack does not mention bilona or curd-churning, assume it is made from cream.

Question 3: Is the source traceable?

National brands usually source milk from many suppliers and blend it for consistency. Farm brands usually come from one herd. Neither is wrong, but a named Gaurishala or farm makes it easier to know how the cows are raised and fed. Our ghee comes from Gir cows at our own Gaurishala in Gujarat.

How to compare A2 ghee brands
Question Big-brand A2 ghee (typical) Small-batch bilona A2 Gir ghee
Breed named? Check the label Usually named (e.g., Gir)
Method Usually cream-based unless stated Curd hand-churned (bilona)
Source Pooled from many suppliers Single herd or Gaurishala
Availability Supermarkets everywhere Online, direct from farm
Price per kg Lower Higher (more milk per kg)

Question 4: Does the price make sense?

Gir cows give much less milk than high-yield breeds, and bilona needs roughly 25 to 30 litres of milk per kilogram of ghee. That is why genuine bilona A2 Gir cow ghee costs much more than cream-based ghee. A very cheap ‘bilona A2’ product deserves extra questions. Compare price per kilogram, then weigh it against breed, method, and source.

Our A2 Gir Cow Bilona Ghee is hand-churned by the bilona method from Gir cow milk, and the product page explains exactly how it is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dabur A2 cow ghee bilona ghee?

Check the brand's own label and website. If a pack does not say bilona or curd-churned, it is most likely made from cream, which is the standard commercial method.

What is the difference between A2 ghee and bilona ghee?

A2 describes the milk protein type, which depends on the breed. Bilona describes the method: churning curd into butter, then heating it into ghee. A ghee can be A2 without being bilona.

Why is bilona A2 Gir cow ghee more expensive?

Gir cows give less milk, and bilona needs roughly 25 to 30 litres of milk per kilogram of ghee, plus hours of hand-churning. That labor and milk cost is reflected in the price.
